A well-qualified judge will come to a Guild approved audition center and hear pupils perform a prepared program. Each pupil will be given an appointed time, which may require being excused from school. The National Guild Auditions are well known to teachers and administrators and are generally considered a legitimate excuse to be absent. Parents are advised that their children play only against a standard of excellence in the Auditions and not against each other.
The Auditions afford an annual check-up under an outside examiner as an incentive to greater progress and encourage all pupils to study longer through national recognition and awards for their achievements. Auditions are private (pupil and judge only). Pupils are judged on individual merit, which includes accuracy, continuity, phrasing, pedaling, dynamics, rhythm, tempo, tone, interpretation, style, and technique. Upon passing, pupils will receive a certificate, a pin, and a complete evaluation!
